A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the rink volunteers this year for contributing their time and energy to our community. To Rob S, Edson C, Bert S, Ray S, Dan M, Doug R, Kevin K, Kelly K, Liam B, Alex S, Nik A, and Nicole W…WE THANK YOU!
See you in the fall/ early winter!

Need Help? Able To Help?

Need help shovelling? Able to help those in who need a little extra help?

After seeing a piece on Global TV news about the need for snow removal services for individuals with limited mobility who are physically unable to shovel their snow, Lewis Estates’ own Chelsea Dufresne started Edmonton’s first snow brigade for this purpose.

If you physically cannot shovel and need assistance shovelling your snow OR if you would like to help out those in your community in need of assistance, contact Chelsea.

Check out her site at http://shovel-brigade.livejournal.com or e-mail her at sb.edmonton@gmail.com.

What is a community league membership?
A community membership helps to support our community league which works towards the betterment of the community at large by:

  • representing you on neighbourhood issues;
  • enhancing community parks, playgrounds and facilities; and
  • providing affordable sports and recreation activities.

How much does a membership cost?
$30 per household

Why should I buy one?
A community league membership is a requirement for playing community sports (e.g. hockey, outdoor soccer, indoor soccer) and for skating on the outdoor rink at Picard park. It also comes with a complimentary WEM family pass while quantities last***. Additional benefits include free swimming at Jasper Place pool, free skating at Callingwood arenas, and discounts at City fitness facilities.

*** NOTE: Our membership year runs from September 1 to August 31 of each calendar year. While it is not a certainty, WEM often donates a limited number of Galaxyland/ Water Park family passes for us to distribute to members of the community league. They are donated in limited quantities and usually expire in February.***

Purchases can be made by clicking on BUY NOW to the right, mailed, or brought in person to: the UPS store at 215, 17008 – 90 Avenue.

Please support your community.

On Thursday, February 18 from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm, the LECL board will host an Open House at the West Meadows Baptist Church (9333 – 199 Street) to discuss an appealed development permit to allow for the construction and operation of a new child care centre behind the 7-11 and its adjacent businesses.

Although an appeal was filed by the daycare operator currently within that commercial property (Sunny View Child Development Center) for various reasons, the LECL board’s concerns focused on increased traffic flow in and around that commercial complex as a result of families dropping off and picking up an additional 129 children.

At this Open House you can:

  • see the plans for the additions to this commercial area, including an 8-stall car wash, a small commercial retail unit, and the potential child development centre;
  • review the results of a traffic and parking study for this location; and
  • ask questions and voice your concerns to the LECL and Zona Developments (the registered land owner of the commercial parcel).

You can access the traffic study here.

You can access the area site plan here.

To ‘Serve and Protect’

The LECL board is definitely not a police agency, but we do feel we have a certain ’serve and protect’ responsibility to our community.

We SERVE our community members by providing recreational opportunities.  We try to PROTECT our community members by having certain rules and guidelines surrounding community facilities and areas. In some cases, these rules are required by our insurance company and in other cases, the City of Edmonton; such as rules around the use of the skating rink (i.e. helmets, skate tags).

This job is not easy and is done on a volunteer basis. What adds to the frustration is the few community members who make a choice to treat our volunteers or other community members disrespectfully. With respect to community property, this has come in the form of vandalism, unnecessary profanity, noise disturbances, bullying, littering, and blatant disregard for the posted rules.

For the sake of the community as a whole, we (the LECL board) reserve the right to take action against those individuals by means of verbal warning, written warning to the household, and then a potential ban from community property or membership until proper restitution has been made to the community.

Although the LECL cannot act against crimes against personal property, we can all act as the eyes and ears for our neighborhood. Parents, we kindly ask that you review the expectations of your children’s behavior and facility rules when visiting community league property unsupervised.

Together we build community!  Thank you.

The Lewis Estates Community League hosted our Winter Fun Day at Picard Park yesterday. Despite the wind chill, many families came out to enjoy the beautiful sunshine and various activities including a sleigh ride, skating, snowshoeing, bannock-making, and marshmallow roasting over a campfire.

A big thanks go out to the following for helping make the event happen:

  • ATB Financial from the Grange Common;
  • Second Cup at Callingwood Square;
  • Safeway at the Grange Common;
  • The LECL Rink Maintenance Team; and
  • Event Volunteers.

We also appreciated the contributions made by Wal-Mart, Starbucks in the Grange Common, and Tim Horton’s at Hawkstone.  We have only good things to say about the services provided by MP Stables and Shelley from the City of Edmonton Community Services.

Finally, thanks to everyone from the community who came out to enjoy the day despite the cold.

The infrastructure upgrades at the Bill Hunter Arena (9200 – 163 Street) are complete and the City is hosting a “re-opening party” on Saturday, February 20, 2010 from 1pm to 6pm.

Renovations were completed to make the facility more energy efficient, extend the facility lifespan, and better serve the recreation, sports and fitness needs of Edmontonians. For information, please visit www.edmonton.ca/arenas.
